Math Pre AP December 19, 2008

Note to parents and students:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE!!

There is a very special assignment during the holidays.   If your child has received a packet, it is because his/her average (1st 6 weeks, 2nd 6 weeks & 3rd 6 weeks Progress Report) is below an 85 in Math Pre AP.  The Standord test will be given January 20-23, 2009 and these concepts/skills along with many others will be covered.  This packet includes 60 word-problems and it is expected to be completed and turned in no later than Friday, January 9, 2009.   Students must show calculations (yes, you can write on the packet!).

The students with an average above 85 decided to take the packet to receive extra credit.  So, except for very few, your child must have the packet.  Even if  it is for extra credit  or because the average is below 85, the student average was written on the letter sent home.

Have safe and Happy Holidays.

Grades and Late Work

Students were given grade print outs this week along with a list of missing assignments. Students had class time to get late work done and turned in. Students should have all missing work turned in by now.

North Africa and Southwest Asia Test

Scores on the test were great! Students should take home the scrantron with any corrections. Any student who made a 75 or below needs to bring the scantron back signed by Jan 9th.

Thanks

Thanks so much for all the well wishes and gifts. It has been a pleasure teaching your child and I look forward to seeing them again in the new year!

Introducing…

December 17, 2008 aparker1 Leave a comment

Parents,

I would like to take minute to introduce you to 6C’s very own reading website, “Ms. Parker’s Bookshelf!” I have introduced students to this site in class and they several have taken advantage of the opportunity to blog about their favorite books. When you have a minute, let your child show you how they are able to share information about the books they are reading with their classmates and check out the cool literacy websites just for teens! I have also included a “Parent Links” page which includes valuable information for encouraging literacy among young adults. The website can be found at http://aparker1.wordpress.com.

Enjoy!

Ms. Parker

Students will have a test over “A Christmas Carol” Monday 12/15 or Tuesday 12/16. Students will be given a choice of five questions, of which they will choose two to respond to in well written paragraphs. They will be allowed to use their book and any notes/ post-it notes they have in them. They will not be allowed to use any other notes. Students are encouraged to decide which questions they are going to respond to and plan their essays. They will choose from the following questions:

  1. When did you first believe that Scrooge had changed? Explain your answer and support it with examples from the text.
  2. Why does everything fill Scrooge with joy after he is visited by the three spirits? Explain your answer.
  3. In your opinion, which spirit had the greatest effect on Scrooge? Explain your answer.
  4. How does Scrooge show his sincerity about his promise to keep Christmas in his heart all year?
  5. How do you think the outcome would have been different if Scrooge had only been visited by Marley’s Ghost and not the Spirits of Christmas?

Students will have a test over “A Christmas Carol” next Monday (12/14) or Tuesday (12/15). The test will consist of responding to two short essay questions (students will be given a choice of five questions). Students will be allowed to use their copy of the novel while taking the test and will receive a study guide Friday (I will post it Friday afternoon).

If students are going to be absent next Monday or Tuesday, they need to make arrangements to take the test beforehand.

There will be no Literary Devices quiz next week.

Science Progress Reports

December 9, 2008 mr. e. Leave a comment

Yesterday and today, students received individual science progress reports. All blue day students should receive a school progress report that matches the individual science report. Green day students may have receive an individual science progress report that differs from the official school report. For both blue and green day students, the most up to date and actual grade is the grade reported on the INDIVIDUAL science progress report. I apologize for any confusion. All students should have the INDIVIDUAL progress report signed for homework.

North Africa/Southwest Asia Unit Test

Students will have a unit test on Friday Dec 12th. They should be studying the map of the region as well as the notes they have taken. A review session will be held on Tuesday Dec 9th from 4:00-4:45pm. It is open to any student who has questions.

History Fair

History Fair grades have been given for the most part. A few people still need to get their grade and will do so on Monday. Boards should be taken home ASAP before they are damaged.

Reminder

Please remember to check the window prior to entering the classroom. Many students are coming to class unprepared which is unacceptable since the supplies needed for class are always listed by the door. Also students please make sure you are returing all borrowed supplies! Currently, I am missing two pairs of blue scissors. It makes it harder for everyone when we have fewer materials in the classroom.

It’s a boy!
Just in case you hadn’t heard Mrs. Husi is expecting a boy. Thanks so much for all the well wishes.
